Daily Mail and The Guardian Teenager Stories
The Daily Mail
The stories on teenagers in the Daily Mail are generally putting us in a bad light, ‘UK teens worst behaved in Europe’ this is a stereotypical headline assuming all teenagers are not well behaved. This shows to anyone who reads the daily mail that teenagers are all awfully behaved compared to the rest of the generations.
It can be argued that the media does not help teenagers behave in a better way, showing teenagers in this light is not helping anyone. the newspapers do not show the achievements teenagers make these days and therefore do not inspire others to make the same achievements. The media can be a bad influence on the younger generations as they are more influenced than the older generations. The more teenagers are shown in a bad light, the more it will encourage teenagers to behave that way.
The newspapers talking about 'facing A level shock' and 'life and death calls answered by teenagers' these headlines clearly show teenagers in distress yet instead of providing help, their problems are just shown in the newspaper for the world to see.
The Guardian
'Hurray for teenagers'
"Why are so many people so negative about teenagers and so rude to them? I'm not talking about the ones who knife each other at bus stops and torment each other to suicide on social networking websites, about whom we read so much in the scared and scaremongering newspapers. I'm talking about everyday, normal teenagers. There is scarcely another group in this country so stereotyped and maligned. Why are people so negative about teenagers, when most of them are adorable, funny, interesting, imaginative, brave, generous, loyal, hard-working and helpful?" These are words of Louisa Young from an article for The Guardian. Unlike The Daily Mail, The Guardian portray teenagers in a positive light and praise them for their achievements instead of tear them down because of a stereotype.
The Guardian and The Daily Mail are different types of newspapers, The Daily Mail is a tabloid newspaper and The Guardian is a broadsheet newspaper, which shows that The Guardian is based more on the truth and targets the information seekers, whereas The Daily Mail targets more of the emotional seekers, as it has bigger headlines trying to draw the reader in and little of the text (copy) as the information is not as important. Looking at different articles from The Guardian there is much more text, and a smaller headline, as it is not a important to grab the readers attention as the text and facts are more important.
