Burn the Witch and Unfinished Sympathy analysis/comparison
Unfinished Sympathy Analysis-
Unfinished Sympathy seems to be about the beginning of something new, a relationship, starting to get involved with someone who then pulls away, 'You're the book I have now opened and now I've got to know much more' which suggests she has had some contact with the person but is left wanting more. 'Like a soul without a mind' conveys the feeling of emptiness as a result of this desire, and suggests that she is missing something she needs. She also expresses her anger that the other person pulled away, 'You really hurt me baby...' The song is full of fear, the fear of falling in love, the fear of getting hurt, the fear of becoming too close, 'really hurt me baby, really cut me baby', which juxtaposes the video as the woman walks through the street with no fear at all, which may be suggesting that she is not afraid of physically dangerous situations, but emotionally terrified.
Burn the Witch Analysis-
Burn the Witch seems to be about The Wicker Man; a colt who has planned to burn the police man (witch) who comes to inspect the village. However, there may be more to the video than what it seems. Radiohead are a very politically motivated band and may have subtly used the video to give a political opinion. First of all, the first clue would be the 'Trumpton Trilogy' a children's TV show, 'Trump' may associate with this as he offers 'childlike' views. The song lyrics could paint a picture of someone who has to hide their opinions from the outside world who is never allowed to express any reaction to injustice, acting as though everything is fine, as others are on a 'witch hunt' and anyone who dares to speak up may get burnt to the stake, 'if you float, you burn'. The bird at the beginning and the end may also be a 'wake up call' to reality, although some may argue the bird represents twitter and the internet surveillance.
Comparison of Burn the Witch and Unfinished Sympathy-
Unfinished Sympathy and Burn the Witch involve fear of some kind, Unfinished Sympathy shows the fear of love and heartbreak, of letting someone in, maybe the thought of being alone is better than the ache of a breakup. Similarly, Burn the Witch shows fear of expressing opinions as the consequences are worse than remaining silent. Both videos have a message which they try to get across to the audience, which are very different from each other because of the different situations they're writing about. Burn the Witch is almost a warning rather than a message, warning people about the impact a world of right-winged views has on us, especially whilst we're competing with immigrants, this is shown in the video via the policeman, who is backed into the Wicker Man and burnt alive. Unfinished Sympathy is showing how difficult it is to be left, and describes the feeling in hope that the audience will be able to relate to the same situation.
