History of Dance Music
In the 60s, a US soul singer James Brown developed a new style of music, Funk.
Disco Music:
By the 70s, nightclubs were called discos, and they employed DJs to play dance tracks as it was much cheaper than hiring a band to play. At first, they played up-tempo soul tracks, however as time moved on tracks with a new rhythm that were easier to dance to were played instead. This new music had a four-on-the-floor bass drum beat with hi-hat on the offbeats. These songs were soon being played all around the world in disco's, soon after the genre of disco music was created.
House Music:
The house music genre was a new style of disco music and was originally played in gay clubs of New York and Chicago. Just like disco, house songs had catchy melodies with lyrics about going out and having fun. They also have a four-on-the-floor disco rhythm. However, in house music, drum machines and synthesizers were often used instead of drum kits and other instruments.
Techno Music:
Techno developed in detroit in the early 80s, when club DJs began making electronic dance tracks. They used drum machines to create electronic rhythms and synthesizers with keyboards to add chords and melodies. They also began sampling short sections of music from old records, especially short drum breaks. A subgenre of techno called trance developed in Europe in the early 90s, and is still popular today. In trance, techno rhythms are mixed with layers of electronic sound, with most tracks building to a climax followed by a breakdown in which the beat stops but the electronic sounds continue.
