Male Gaze Theory- music video
The Male Gaze Theory Music Video of my choice
Katy Perry- Bon Appetit
In this music video Katy Perry has a relationship with the males and females in the audience. She shows herself to be in control towards the men, empowering herself which inspires the women, and makes them feel like that is how they should be. I would say that this music video is more aimed at the women to try and empower them as they should take control instead of the men. However, this video still contains a significant amount of The Male Gaze, as Katy Perry is wearing very little clothing for the majority of the video and is presenting herself purposely in a sexual way. The clothing that she wears links with the lyrics of the video because it is mainly about giving herself away to the men for sex, even though she still feels in control.
The audience could look at the singer in many ways, first of all, the feminists in the audience would most likely disagree with the way she presents herself and the way she intentionally uses The Male Gaze. The male gender in the audience may however disagree as they may enjoy seeing women in that light.
It may be deceiving that Katy Perry has the most power in the video, some might argue that the men have the power because while Perry is 'spread like a buffet' on the plate, the men are free to do whatever they want to her, which can show her vulnerability at this time. The audience have power too because they can voice their opinion on the video online.
The Mise-en-scene, the lighting and focus of the camera is all focused on The Male Gaze (the women) as well as the props used, the food which is smothered over Katy Perry. This emphasizes the sexuality of the women. cvf
