Stranger Things analysis

In stranger things, age is stereotyped, the children are the innocent, vulnerable characters who end up the protagonists, the children are the main characters of the show, one child is in distress and needs help, and the other children try to help as the police struggle to find him.
The teenager in these clips was typically in her room, on the phone, dating and then rudely slams the door in her brothers friends face. The teenager has a smaller role in the program than the kids, however, still has a main part, more so than some of the adults.
The parents seem to be the 'kill joy' generation, the mother interrupts the campaign and disrupt the children's fun. The parents of the show do not have a significant role, (other than mikes mother and the sheriff) this may be because the show is based on children and as the generations get older the roles become less important to the show and the audience.
When the mother is standing at the top of the stairs, and Mike is standing at the bottom, this is called a low-angled shot used to illustrate the authority of the mother.
The dialogue between the children is colloquial, as they are friends so they tend to speak more informally, using sociolect. However, conversations involving parents tend to be using standard English, as the parents are from a time where slang is not used as much.
The Mise-en-scene shows that this show is set in the 80's by the use of clothing, bikes, telephones and their general way of life. In the 80's children generally played with board games more which is shown in the clips, instead of entertainment for technology such as phones, laptops etc.
Diegetic sound is used to show the dialogue in the show, also non-diegetic sound is used for effect, to show the mood or what is happening in the show, for example; when the kids are riding on the bike back to their houses, there is quick, up beat music, which is not only used to show the race, it may also be used to build suspense for an unfortunate event that may later happen.
The establishing shot at the beginning of clip 2, sets the scene of the town, however, also mirrors the sheriff's lifestyle which is lonely. This may be a stereotype of most middle aged men who smoke, drink and have an unhealthy lifestyle.
Shot-reverse-shot is used to show two characters having a conversation, this shot is used during the game in clip 1 to show the children having a heated discussion about what move to play, this shot is significant as it shows each of the characters facial expressions, the children's conversations are about make believe games which are not at all like reality however, when the establishing shot is used with adults, their conversations are much more serious, and are always about real life problems.
